The Battle Of Indonesian

August 3, 2010

The Battle Of Indonesian 200cmx290cm mixed media.

this work are as one of the work in Jogja Biennale Neo-Nation in 2007, now it selected for Mediations Biennale 2010 in  Pozan, Polandia with Heri Dono, Achmad Gozali and me.

before my work send to the Biennale I make it has a small project it called the battle Of Indonesian tour, when I am traveling I always bring the battle stickers and put it in some place like airport toilet, on the body of aircraft, the place where I stay etc. and I give for free to “special” persons who I meet on the way and take a picture of it.

When this work done, I’m concerned with issues of nationalism, in which time many State assets sold into foreign hands, lot of Indonesian workers outside the country who receive inhuman treatment and even until someone dies. I am also pleased with the rock band Rage Against The Machine, where they continued to criticize the work of political issues, war, and global humanity.

With this work I wanted to convey how the Indonesian people we cultivate a sense of pride in our self, no longer willing to continue to be under foreign pressure or Indonesian people it self who want exploited by foreigners and selling his own country, we must make sure that the Indonesian nation and the people are not more inferior to other nations. Many people still see strangers better than us, this is not an anti-attitude to foreigners, do we need to better understand each other to minimize something that was sacrificed, with this work can hopefully foster a more positive sense between peoples and nations.

The battle of Indonesian is one of a series of works about national pride, where the creation of such works is an outpouring of anxiety and attitude on the issue that occurs when the work was done. Hopefully with the start of my self and do as much as possible to the social environment around us, one day this nation will become bigger and more confident.

I believe in this world there’s no death line accept death it self, if we try the best we can in this sort time of life with “weapons” that we have. I use arts as a “weapons” it mean if I am a visual artist, I will use my talent that I have to share with other using visual art as much as I can. If we are musicians, use your music to change the peoples point of view to start make a change. If we are a journalist, write the truth, express the real fact and criticism all the problems. So for all people with all their “weapons” we can make a change for better future for us and for our next generation.

Most people didn’t believe art can change the world but I believe we can change the world for be a better place with our “weapons”.

Dear Muliana Bayak,

I attach the photo in the place where i put the sticker. This photo was taken in my house/studio. May be sounds a little wear for you but…in my Country (Uruguay) all the people drink mate tee everywhere so i can go with your sticker holding my thermos (to exhibitions, to teach at the University, to the Stadium to see soccer, to the market…) and explain to people here when they ask me about this pacific and in a same way strong Battle of INDONESIAN… your ideas. In the past here we was lived a Dictatorial period (1973-1985), i grow up silenced… and i remember very well that the citizens used the thermos or “la matera” (a special bag to carry the mate-thermo equipment) also to communicate by stickers their ideas of freedom, human rights, politic ideas, … against the totalitarianism.

Congratulations for your work!!!

if you see Heri Dono please send a hug also from this side of our World…
